inspirational tools to create life balance in your everyday

Gadam

November14

it wasn’t until I met you that I knew
what the word twinkle meant
surrounded by your family
happiness twinkled in your blue blue eyes

always looking as though
you expected the day to turn out just right
you weaved stories
using your smile as the punctuation mark

and those around you
felt special when you spoke to them
you were present
as if they were the only person in the room

I watched you wear the title of
husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend
and each you held with an ease
painted in integrity

you were the kind of person
that people were proud to know
the kind of man that I wanted to introduce to people
because I knew that their lives would be better for it

I understood your love of the ocean
how the dance of the tide brought your heart back to balance
I admired the time you gave to your passions
carving the details to the perfect egg cup out of a block of honey colored wood

a person that loved and lived
until the pages of his story were brimming over with words
you passed down the best parts of yourself
and I’m so fortunate to see them every day in the kindness of my husband’s words and the twinkle in my baby girl’s blue blue eyes

let it be

June9

don’t let it be about the laundry
let it be about first laughter

don’t let it be about the gossip
let it be about what you can say in front of everyone

don’t let it be about the dust on the shelf
let it be about the books that carpet those shelves

don’t let it be about the error in the architect’s plans
let it be about the building of your dream home

don’t let it be about the size of your clothes
let it be about fabric and color and grace

don’t let it be about the reputation of the restaurant
let it be about the passion in the food

don’t let it be about what an egg has always looked like
let it be about how color and creativity can sing it into magic

don’t let it be about the bank balance
let it be about the joy that you bring to the things you already have

don’t let it be about the worry
let it be about choosing the calm

don’t let it be about the movie review
let it be about feeling snug inside the theatre with popcorn in your hand

don’t let it be about your family’s flaws
let it be about the love that will always connect you

don’t let it be about the weekends
let it be about the everyday

don’t let it be about size of your car
let it be about the people it contains

don’t let it be about weather
let it be about bright rain boots and oversized hats

don’t let it be about what they think
let it be about how you feel

don’t let it be about the shoulds
let it be about the coulds

don’t let it be about the how it was impossible for them
let it be about it is possible for you

don’t let it be about the news at six
let it be about how you share your news

don’t let it be about waking up to what you worry might happen
let it be about waking up to what you hope will

don’t let it be about their life
let it be about caring for your life so it can overflow happily into theirs

don’t let it be about ice cream
let it be about ice cream with chocolate and cherries on top

don’t let it be about tomorrow
let it be about today

I wish for you

May1

I wish for you
a world where the kisses out number the cries
where you awake
to the unconditional eyes of love

I wish for you afternoons
that make spaces for spontaneous naps
and mornings that break wide open
with the smile of possibility

I wish for you
the color of a rainbow
landing silently on your skin
and the belief that the pot of gold hides somewhere on a cloud

I wish for you
the light of love
to warm your cooler nights
and the feeling of beauty streaming from your inside out

I wish for you
showers of laughter
and walks where green sunlight streams through tree branches
and holds you still with wonder

I wish for you
the taste of authenticity
as your
words leave your mouth

I wish for you
the nostalgia of songs
so many songs
that sing you back to your memories

I wish for you the sweetness
of sugar
and the sound of an apple
plucked right from the tree

I wish for you sand and salt
and the air of Australian seas
rocking you warmly
to sleep

I wish for you
to be in awe of the Redwood tree
creaking mysteriously
in the night

there isn’t enough ink in the world
for what I wish for you
standing here watching you sleep
only nine weeks old

around soft corners

February1

this morning
wrapped in scarf and coat
I walk slowly
balancing this heavy belly

around the soft corners
of our neighborhood
winter chill
whipping my cheeks to pink

and my mind alert
to the movements
now slow and bold
in these last days before your birth

nature feels close
my body ripe
like falling fruit
and I feel most calm

out here amongst
the wind and sun and winter blooms
especially the magnolia tree
who leans outside

of the Japanese garden
as if trying to fill the cobalt sky
with her long and unorganized branches
full with thick strong buds

that stretch stiff and shiny white
like hundreds of unopened letters
waiting to be let go and read
amongst her deep roots

and I bask under these almond
shaped shadows
which fall among white pebbles
under my feet

and feel the same kind of delighted
anticipation
of opening a long awaited envelope
as I do about meeting you
